About Sydney:
The two most striking features in any visitors mind of Sydney are it’s famous Opera House – the Sydney Opera House, and alongside – just across in the harbour and making up part of the Sydney skyline also, is Sydney’s famous Harbour Bridge.
Sydney’s Harbour bridge was a feat of engineering and joined the dense northern part of Sydney starting from North Sydney, all the way to Palm Beach and Hornsby to the southern part of Sydney, where the CBD (central business district) is located, Surry Hills, the famous Eastern Suburbs including Bondi Beach, the southern and Western Suburbs – such as Parramatta.
Popular amongst American travelers was the famous advertising by Paul Hogan, the star actor of Crocodile Dundee who said “wanna put another shrimp on the barbie” was in fact before he became famous a painter on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
Sydney’s population is made up of a mix of anglo saxon immigrants – from the UK and Ireland, but then a dichotomy of other races and cultures, including indigenous Aboriginals, Asians (in particular from Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Japan, Korea) who came in the 50s-present day, Greeks and Italians who came just after world war 2 and conitnue to migrate through family. And also many from the former Yugoslavia and Balkan countries such as Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and so on.
This provides a mix of exciting cuisine with Sydney’s can do, but quality of life attitude. Bondi Beach which is probably the world’s most famous beach is situated in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. It is a popular weekend attraction and has some great surf – but you need to be a pretty serious surfer – because many of the waves are ‘dumpers’ which means they crash quickly and don’t roll in like Waikiki beach and popular other beaches – to this extent – Bondi beach isn’t a Malibu / long board type beach but is more of a short board beach. There are however some great beaches in the North of Sydney – Sydney’s Northern Beaches – such as Manly and Harbord which are great for longboard surfing.
There is a ferry from Sydney Harbour to Manly and then you can catchup buses to other areas. The fares are cheap and this is probably the best way to enjoy Sydney Harbour without spending a fortune.
Public transport in Sydney is regular and fast and cheap – in our Getting to and from Sydney and around once here section – we explain this in more detail with maps and guides on how to get around. There is a great train, bus and ferry network. Coupled with Australia’s largest density of Taxis.
Staying in Sydney and Accommodation can range from budget to luxurious. The choice is yours. The CBD area (which has the main business district) has mostly business hotels – often which aren’t cheap – but are of course luxurious and 5* in many ways – properties such as the Intercontinental, the Four Seasons, Shangri La, Westin, Sheraton on the Park and the Hilton are great examples of this. The Hilton borders on the more interesting part of town where there is more action and it’s less businessy. Which means you are closer to Chinatown, the shopping districts and Sydney’s vibrant harbour and it’s famous Gay area – Oxford Street, Darlinghurst – home to the Mardi Gras which runs around February or March each year with floats, dykes (lesbians) on bikes – most harley davidson’s! and the popular queens and gays! A sight to be seen! And the reason why there are just so many things to do in Sydney which we can recommend you try.
In the Chinatown / Ultimo area you will find great priced 3-4* accommodation which is new, modern and value for money. We recommend the Travelodge Sydney which is a modern, value for money 3-4* property which is central and walkable to all parts of Sydney, close to great value food, nightlife and more!
Bondi Beach also has hotels such as the Swiss Grand, which you can also book on our site, but it’s far away from the main cities attractions and can prove cumbersome unless you like take long rides on public transport.
Another popular activity as you travel in Sydney is a Harbour Cruise. Cruises are available for both lunch and dinner, and guests will have a chance to stroll and dine as they sail around the beautiful harbor.
For many travelers who are new to the city and looking for Sydney attractions, a tour of the city itself provides a great way to become familiar with all things Sydney. The Sydney Monorail is a great way to see Sydney, you can travel through Sydney’s darling harbour all the way into town on the monorail and all day passes start from just $5.00
Free walking tour brochures and information can be found free of charge, and have been provided by the City of Sydney’s Historical Program. Brochures can be found at any library or community center within the city of Sydney. Or at any Hotel’s concierge desk or at the airport information desk upon Arrival at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport in the suburb of Mascot.
While taking your walking tour as part of your Australia sightseeing, you might happen to stroll by The Rocks, a section of Sydney once known for it’s squalid and disease ridden condition. But today it is a hugely popular tourist site and is Australia’ oldest set of established colonial buildings of record.
Taronga Zoo which is Australia’s most famous zoo is only a 5 minute ferry ride across from the Opera house. You can touch a Koala and cuddle it up close and pat a Kangaroo. Entry fees are little and the fun for the whole day is guaranteed. Don’t forget to see the other animals include the Zoo’s resident grizzly bear population – scary. Check out our Things to Do in Sydney section for more detail.
Things have changed since the days of the prison settlements, and modern day tourists will see none of the destitute buildings of the past. In the early 1970s, The Rocks was completely renovated, to create one of the most charming neighborhoods for shopping and enjoying local cafes. The history alone makes this an interesting stop when visiting Sydney Australia.
These are just a few of the fun and interesting landmarks and activities to be enjoyed in Sydney, Australia. However you spend your time in one of the world’s most famous cities and most popular cities! – you will be sure to find many unique Sydney attractions and exciting things to do here.
